GP Quiz 33 – Case 1

Name the vascular naevus.

Capillary haemangioma (strawberry naevus)

What features distinguish this condition?

The strawberry naevus or capillary haemangioma is a common proliferative vascular lesion, arising in about 10% of babies. Over 80% arise on the head and neck area and vary in size from tiny dot to several centimetres in diameter. Frequently multiple, they may be accompanied by a cavernous or subcutaneous haemangioma. The capillary haemangioma is more common in premature infants, and rapidly enlarges over several months. Most involute spontaneously over 5 to 7 years. Seek specialist advice from a paediatric dermatologist for the management of large naevi or those arising close to eye, nose or mouth.
