The DermNet PRO Synonym Project set out to compile synonyms for every skin condition featured on DermNet PRO. The project focused on identifying synonyms, common names, and alternative spellings, ensuring skin conditions could be easily found in search results regardless of the search terms users entered. Over approximately six months, seventy volunteers contributed over 10,000 synonyms to the DermNet PRO database. Each volunteer not only researched and added synonyms for their assigned skin conditions, but also peer-reviewed a selection of synonyms submitted by fellow volunteers.
Once volunteers finished adding and reviewing the synonyms, the complete list underwent a final verification by the in-house DermNet team before deployment.
This project has fundamentally enhanced the DermNet PRO search tool, establishing it as one of the world’s premier resources for instantly finding comprehensive dermatology information.
