Brown skin colour is most often due to melanin, a protein produced in the epidermis by melanocytes. Various dermopathies have characteristic patterns of pigmentation.

Flagellate erythema
Describe the condition
Scratching is a superficial skin injury and doesn’t often result in pigmentation. However, it may do so if the patient is taking various medications, including tetracyclines. Flagellate erythema and subsequent pigmentation is especially characterisitic of bleomycin, as in this case.
