What is the name of the skin condition illustrated?
Grover's disease.
What is its cause?
The cause is unknown. Grover's disease usually affects elderly men. Some cases, as illustrated, follow a febrile episode and may be a form of miliaria. Underlying actinic damage is often present. The histology is of epidermal acantholysis (separation of the cells), rather like the genodermatosis, Darier's Disease.
What treatment should be recommended?
Grover's disease is usually self-limited, although it may be complicated by dermatitis. Management should be directed at relieving pruritus. Mild topical steroids or cooling applications usually help. Irritation of the skin by sun, sweat and harsh soap should be avoided.
