What is wrong with her tongue?
She has benign migratory glossitis (erythema migrans, geographic tongue). Multiple smooth red patches on the dorsum of the tongue are outlined by an elevated white margin. The lesions can be observed to shift each day, resulting in map-like patterns. Benign migratory glossitis affects 5-10% of the population and is most prevalent in young children. It can be an oral manifestation of psoriasis, but most affected individuals have no evidence for psoriasis elsewhere.

Benign migratory glossitis is usually asymptomatic but the red smooth areas can be sensitive. Discuss how hot, acidic or seasoned foods may sting. No effective treatment for the glossitis is known, but in symptomatic patients consider whether there may be additional oral pathology such as candidiasis.
