What is the name of the lesion?
Keratoacanthoma
What is the most common differential diagnosis?
Squamous cell carcinoma
What treatment is recommended?
The lesion should usually be surgically removed. It can be shelled out by shave &/or curettage with cautery or diathermy to the base. Histopathological examination should be arranged. Full excision biopsy is necessary for recurrent cases
What other treatments have been used successfully?
Cryotherapy can be used for small lesions. As keratoacanthomas may reach enormous size and may be on surgically awkward sites such as the mid-face, some cases are treated medically. Intralesional bleomycin, fluoruracil and methotrexate have been successfully used. Oral acitretin may be useful particularly for multiple lesions.
