What is the diagnosis?
Telogen effluvium. This is the shedding of normal club hairs as a result of different types of stress.
What are possible causes?
Parturition, sudden weight loss, blood loss, fever, head injury, emotional stress, medications; all occurring two to six months earlier.
What further tests are necessary (if any)?
Examine plucked hairs to confirm that there is a large proportion of clubs; they would be anagen hairs if alopecia areata were responsible for the diffuse hair loss. Measure full blood count if relevant. Telogen effluvium may be an early sign of androgenetic alopecia; if other symptoms warrant it, check hormonal status.
What is the treatment?
Telogen effluvium is self-limited and regrowth normally occurs within six to twelve months. If it is severe however, regrowth may be incomplete.
