What is this skin lesion?
Superficial spreading malignant melanoma
What are the clinical features of this disorder?
The superficial forms of melanoma are recognised by slow growth or change in structure or colour, resulting in an odd-looking or 'ugly duckling' lesion. There may be several colours and the shape is often quite irregular. In this case it had grown to about 7 cm in diameter. Most of the lesion was histologically in situ, but the shiny red area was invasive melanoma, 2.1 mm in thickness (Breslow).
