What is the name of the skin condition?
Necrobiosis lipoidica
What underlying systemic disease(s) or condition is it caused by?
Necrobiosis lipoidica is often associated with diabetes mellitus. Although initial history did not reveal any specific health issues, her fasting blood sugar was found to be 10 mmol/L.
Necrobiosis lipoidica is thought to be due to microangiopathy; however, diabetes mellitus is present in only about 20% of cases. Although more strongly associated with Type 1 diabetes, increasingly it is recognized that it may also occur with Type II disease. It is notoriously resistant to treatment, but a variety of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive treatments may be of benefit to some patients.
