What is the name for the skin condition?
Cutaneous atrophy (thin skin, fragility and diffuse purpura), a normal feature of aging skin. It is usually most marked on the hands, forearms and lower legs.
What medications may be responsible?
Cutaneous atrophy is a common complication of systemic steroid therapy, including oral, injected and inhaled forms.
What management would you recommend?
Steroid-induced atrophy results in stellate hypopigmented scars and prolonged pigmentation from haemosiderin deposition. There is very little improvement if and when the steroid treatment is discontinued. Affected skin should be protected from injury. Minor lacerations generally heal rapidly.
