What is this condition called?
Folliculitis decalvans
Describe its clinical features and treatment.
Folliculitis decalvans is a chronic neutrophilic scarring alopecia that affects the vertex and occipital scalp of middle-aged adults. It is also known as tufted folliculitis because multiple hairs extrude from a single follicle as scarred hairless areas extend. Staphylococcus aureus is routinely cultured from perifollicular erostions and pustules. If tetracyclines prove unsuccessful, 2 to 3-month courses of antistaphylococcal antibiotics may be of benefit, e.g., rifampicin 300 mg bd combined with clindamycin 300mg bd or flucloxacillin 500 mg bd.
