What is this condition called?
Dissecting cellulitis
Describe its clinical features and treatment.
Dissecting cellulitis results in unsightly and painful interconnecting inflammatory nodules and draining abscesses. Its other name is perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens. It often results in extensive areas of permanent hair loss. It is often associated with other disorders in which there is follicular occlusion, including acne conglobata and hidradenitis suppurativa. Dissecting cellulitis is extremely resistant to treatment. Oral retinoids, high dose antibiotics and/or surgical drainage may help.
