Acanthosis nigricans
How would you treat it?
Velvety thickening, pigmentation and increased skin markings on the neck fold are due to acanthosis nigricans. Acanthosis nigricans is a sign of insulin resistance, which may be subclinical or causing type 2 diabetes. Treatment requires addressing obesity, metabolic syndrome and its complications i.e., promoting weight loss, physical activity, ACE inhibitors and metformin.
Keratolytic emollients such as urea cream may improve the appearance of the thickened skin.
