One is often faced with a solitary red patch of skin to diagnose. Some clues to differentiate the most common conditions are presented in this quiz.

It is particularly important to identify malignant tumours.

Actinic (solar) keratosis with dermoscopic view

Actinic (solar) keratosis is often pink or red. When solitary, it is usually found on face (nose, temple, upper lip, eyebrow) or hand. Although often a flat patch, it is characterised by horny adherent scale. Dermatoscopic examination reveals a red vascular and scaly network around follicular orifices (strawberry pattern).
