What is this skin problem?
Nonspecific intertrigo or seborrhoeic deramatitis
What is this skin problem?
The term 'intertrigo' refers to a rash in skin folds, and may include a variety of named dermatoses that favour these sites. The images shows a non-specific erythematous rash in the vault of the axilla. Irritation, friction and moisture favour the growth of Candida albicans and gram-negative bacteria. It may be diagnosed as seborrhoeic dermatitis if this condition is found elsewhere.
Fragrance-free antiperspirants are recommended to reduce sweating, and a 2-week course of imidazole cream may be prescribed; combined preparations containing hydrocortisone may be helpful. It is worthwhile taking swabs if initial treatment fails, as Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci are sometimes cultured from intertriginous eruptions.
