What is the name of the skin condition?
Scar sarcoidosis
She hasn't been feeling very well recently, and complains of sore eyes and some shortness of breath. A skin biopsy was undertaken, which showed sarcoidal granulomas.
What underlying systemic disease(s) or condition is it caused by?
Further investigations were consistent with systemic sarcoidosis. She was treated successfully with low-dose prednisone, required for several years.
Cutaneous sarcoidosis takes various forms, characterised histologically by non-caseating 'naked' granulomas. These often present as yellowish to brown or violaceous dermal plaques, often favouring areas of previous trauma. Cutaneous sarcoidosis may or may not be associated with systemic disease, especially pulmonary sarcoid, and treatment is directed at the internal organ involvement. The cause(s) are unknown.
